La storia della Gravità Quantistica: Dalla nascita della Relatività Generale al secondo dopoguerra (1915-1945) [Tesi di dottorato]
A theory that reconciles the deepest theory of gravitation available, i.e. General Relativity, with Quantum Mechanics is still not available. In spite of this fact, the search for a theoretical framework that can unify these two far apart views began a hundred years ago, in 1915, with the birth of Einstein's theory, in a historical period in which, more than today, it was not possible to submit this theoretical model to a experimental verification. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a historical reconstruction of these first attempts, from 1915 to 1945, starting with an analysis of the primary sources, published in the journals of the time. The thesis research would like to underline how the drive towards the unification of the two theoretical frameworks has always been present, and it wants to bring out the fact that the various formulations have evolved in turn stimulated by the progressive extension of the concept of quantization. Among all attempts published in the scientific journals of the period, the thesis examines in more detail the works of some authors, because they represent more complex contributions, regardless of the degree of resonance they have had in the following years. In addition to these approaches, other attempts have been also described briefly. If the main theme is the quantization of the gravitational force, it emerges the fact that there are many roads examined by scientists working in this area at this time. It is therefore difficult, if not impossible, to bring the various contributions to an orderly succession. To remedy this fragmentation, which otherwise is a matter of fact for the research in this area between 1915 and 1945, we present a detailed chronology at the end of each chapter..
